Matt, the founder of MDA, practices architecture, interior and furniture design. This involves stages such as; conceptual design, developed design, resource consents, detailed design & building consents with an interior design stage.

Through these stages, the studio collaborates with local artisans and can oversee construction thorugh to completion, with an architectural and builders eye, blending artistry with real-world practicality.

The design philosophy allows unique designs to respond to the environment with a sense of time and place whilst embodying raw and honest materials that become special over time.

Matt collaborates with local and international clients delivering extraordinary projects from Auckland and the Coromandel Mountain Studio.

PROFILE

Ancient Architecture started with a handful of people who fused architecture and construction, they were called Architectons.

I begin projects by visiting the property and forming a relationship with the clients and their dreams.
I then cycle between developing ideas traditionally on paper and in architectural software. This hybrid medium approach allows me to be both authentically creative and efficient.

"Architecton (Greek: ἀρχιτέκτων) means "master builder" or "chief craftsman," a combination of archi- (chief/leader) and tekton (builder/artisan), referring to the person directing and creating a structure, encompassing both design and construction".

I bring together architecture and carpentry in my practice, blending artistry with real-world practicality.

We oversee all phases of the build, working with skilled artisans and tradespeople to bring architectural visions to life, while maintaining strict quality control and attention to detail.

External Partnerships

We select partners from our extensive network based on their suitability for the project and its development phase, and they cover services as diverse as carpentry, electical, plumbing, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, landscape design. We select teams whose we trust from previous projects. This provides the client with enhancing the overall quality and success of each design.

Onsite Architectural Monitoring

We provide thorough construction monitoring to ensure the highest standards are maintained throughout the building process. With a deep understanding of both architecture and construction, we closely track progress to make certain that timelines, specifications, and budgets are met, while addressing any potential issues early on.

Project Management

The project manager's role is to carefully assess the balance between time, cost, and quality, estimate the risks of each component and how they impact the overall outcome, and help teams achieve a balance that results in the best possible scenario. With our combined architectural and building knowledge, we ensure seamless execution, keeping projects on schedule, within budget, and in line with the client’s vision.
